I can't believe we didn't post this back in the day. The idea is that it's not a single straight, one-dimensional spectrum from liberal to conservative (with some extras on the edges) nor a circle (I personally find that anarchists could be at either end of the previous spectrum, thus the circle) but a surface. The two directions are economic and social, and go from authoritarian to libertarian in both directions. The questions are, more or less, "would you, if you could, control the economy directly" and "would you, if you could, control people's behavior directly". (At least, that's how I see it.)
