Reference > Top Israeli Officer Says Tactics Are Backfiring
Description :: Molly Moore, Washington Post Foreign Service, Friday, October 31, 2003
Israeli military is starting to complain that it's not comfortable with what it's being asked to do -- pilots refusing to fly bombing missions, and now the senior military commander, Lt. General Moshe Yaalon, expressing concerns that they're just making matters worse in Palestine.

The Israeli army is not the enemy of Palestinians -- it's the civilians, the politicians that tell the army what to do. An army should stand for its nation, its people, and take the brunt of attacks against them -- but it seems like there's a piece of the terrorist puzzle here. Terrorists attacking civilians, civilians asking the military to take care of terrorists, military can't avoid hitting both terrorists and civilians, civilians join terrorists, civilians join the army ...

Can this problem be solved militarily without wiping Palestinians (who care) out entirely, a massacre? Many problems are initially solved the wrong way: a social problem is often solved by technological, judicial or military methods first, without much success. But to stop now might seem like admitting defeat -- a cycle that never ends, where the ante gets increased indefinitely. Eventually, the problem must be solved. But how?
